From Press Release

For the second straight year, two Griffins earned preseason accolades as junior attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) and senior defenseman Tom Carfagna (Laurys Station, Pa.) were selected by InsideLacrosse.com to represent Chestnut Hill College as 2013 Face-Off Yearbook DII Preseason All-Americans.

Face-off Yearbook serves as the primary preseason literature for intercollegiate lacrosse at all levels of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition.

Melnychenko and Carfagna were two of 10 East Coast Conference (ECC) student-athletes to earn preseason all-american status. The New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) offered the only First Teamer in junior defenseman Danny McDermott (Vancouver, BC).

His teammates, sophomore midfielder Brandon Gamblin (Lake Grove, N.Y.), and sophomore attacker Luke Miller (Mastic, N.Y.) were recognized with Second Team and Honorable Mention selections. Dowling College placed three student-athletes on the Second Team with junior defensemen Sheldon Burns (Whitby, Ontario) and Derek Muzio (Sheldon, N.Y.) joining senior midfielder Lou Riley (Smithtown, N.Y.) on the roster. C.W. Post University’s senior defenseman J.D. Skura (Clarence, N.Y.) and Mercy College’s T.J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y.) joined Carfagna as an Honorable Mention.

Melnychenko earned a Second Team selection to the 2013 Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-American roster a year after earning an Honorable Mention to 2012 edition. In 2012, Melnychenko returned to the All-ECC roster as a Second Team honoree.

As a sophomore, Melnychenko finished the season as the ECC’s third leading scorer with a team-high 36 goals. He also recorded 12 assists to rank fourth in the league for points with 48. He totaled 25 ground balls and ten caused turnovers while earning the ECC Player of the Week award on March 13 and two mentions on the ECC Weekly Honor Roll (5/2 and 5/8). Melnychenko was the ECC Rookie of the Year in 2011 after leading the NCAA DII in goals-per-game (3.57).

Carfagna was recognized as an Honorable Mention on the 2013 Face-Off Yearbook Preseason All-American roster. He was recognized as the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) at the end of the 2012 season after serving as the Griffins premier defender throughout the season.

He recorded six points (two goals and four assists) while leading the team in ground balls (56), and caused turnovers (27). He was also 5-of-9 (.556) in the faceoff circle.

The Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team finished their second season under Head Coach Brian Dougherty at 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the ECC. The Griffins were ranked as high as 8th in Inside Lacrosse’s Face-Off Yearbook and United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches’ Poll during a two-week period (3/19 & 3/27).

The men’s lacrosse team returns to action this spring on February 23, with a 2:00 p.m. contest at #2 Le Moyne College.
