US Lacrosse has named Lehigh University the host site for the 2013 US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament (WNT), slated for Memorial Day weekend, May 25-26, 2013.
The tournament, which dates back to 1933, features US Lacrosse chapter-selected teams, showcasing the best high school girl’s players across the country as well as international competition.
Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pa.) as well as Discover Lehigh Valley Sports have partnered with US Lacrosse to host the tournament in addition to presenting sponsors, Harrow and The Heather Leigh Albert Foundation. The US Lacrosse WNT, formerly known as the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament, was held at Lehigh University from 2001 to 2007.
“We are very happy to be bringing the National Tournament back to Lehigh,” said Beth Porreca, director of special events at US Lacrosse. “Having hosted the tournament here many times in the past, we know Lehigh University and Discover Lehigh Valley Sports are exceptional hosts and are well versed in running safe and enjoyable events. We look forward to another year of introducing the best talent in the country to top collegiate coaches at this historic showcase for women’s lacrosse.”
The tournament is held in conjunction with the NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse finals and hosts the schoolgirl’s division, grades 9-11, and the [high school] seniors-only division. In 2012, more than 1,400 women’s lacrosse players on 66 teams participated in the tournament, with 62 of the teams competing in the schoolgirl’s division. The U.S. women’s national team is also scheduled to play an exhibition game against Team Canada in preparation for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup to be held in Oshawa, Canada, July 11-20.
“The return of the US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament to Lehigh Valley is a big deal for the Lehigh Valley Community and surrounding areas,” said Michael Kuzmuk of Discover Lehigh Valley Sports. “US Lacrosse will once again stage one of its largest events at Lehigh University, which successfully hosted the event for six consecutive years. I know the entire hospitality infrastructure in this region is ready to embrace this tournament again. We’ve been working hard to bring the Women’s National Tournament back to Lehigh University and we’re honored to be hosting it again.”
Yolo is the official retailer sponsor and Shock Doctor is the official mouthguard of the 2013 US Lacrosse Women’s National Tournament.
