From Press Release and Staff Report

Joining a crowd expected to exceed 10,000, the Chestnut Hill College men’s lacrosse team will head to Ridley High on Sunday for its third year of participation in the 6th Annual Nick Colleluori Classic.

Since 2006, the lacrosse community has descended on the small blue collar town to join the fight against blood cancer and the HEADstrong Foundation. To learn more about the Colleluori family and the HEADstrong Foundation mission, please visit the website at: www.HEADstrongfoundation.org.

Chestnut Hill College began attending the HEADstrong Tournament in 2010, only days before a team member, Norristown’s Shane Franzone, was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a rare blood disease that left him in critical condition for many months. Franzone has continued to make a strong recovery and has been out of the hospital for almost six months. He recently began attending classes at Montgomery County Community College this fall. See story last year on a special fundraiser by the CHC men’s and women’s teams.

The two-day Nick Colleluori Classic is dedicated to remembering the life and legacy of HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori while promoting the importance of community, brotherhood and sportsmanship within the sport. Nick “HEAD” Colleluori was a 2004 graduate of Ridley High School and a member of the 2005 Hofstra University lacrosse team before passing from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in November of 2006. Colleluori began the HEADstrong Foundation to help those who have been diagnosed with blood cancers, and to put an end to this horrible disease.

Over 20 collegiate men’s lacrosse programs, 5,000 supporters, and a large group of volunteers settle upon Ridley High School annually for this weekend of top-level collegiate lacrosse and charity. The Griffins raised nearly $5,000 for the HEADstrong Foundation last year, which has risen over $1 million toward blood cancer research and family assistance.

Participating institutions collected donations for the HEADStrong Foundation by selling t-shirts for the event. Often referred to as the NCC this event is an emotional experience to be part of. Each team is led by an honorary captain who is either a survivor or patient of blood cancer. The Colleluori family delivers a heartfelt address to all of the participants and attendees during the HEADstrong presentation. Each program is recognized for their commitment to the foundation and giving sincere appreciation for making the event a success.

The HEADstrong Foundation has released the schedule for the event. Games will begin both days at 9:00 a.m. With the most teams ever assembled, this year’s event will include a huge fan fest, a clinic hosted by some of the best players in the game, contests, prizes, and a great cause.
