Women’s recruits: Barnes (Garnet Valley), two Moorestown grads lead freshmen at Rutgers

Rutgers University head women’s lacrosse coach Laura Brand-Sias (Radnor) welcomes eight student-athletes to the Scarlet Knights program for the 2013 season. Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.), Amanda Currell (Moorestown, N.J.), Addington Elliott (Rumson, N.J.), Madeline Hulsey (Sherwood Forest, Md.), Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.), Nikki McMonagle (Moorestown, N.J.), Taylor Pennell (New Egypt, N.J.) and Chrissy Schreiber (East Meadow, N.Y.) are the newest members of the 2013 Scarlet Knights.

Halley Barnes A/M Garnet Valley/Garnet Valley, Pa.

Prior to Rutgers: Four-year letterwinner for Garnet Valley High School… Finished her high school career with 365 points, landing her among the nation’s Top 25 for most points accumulated in a high school career … Finished the 2012 season with 111 goals, the seventh most in the nation … Finished among in the nation’s top 20 for most points accumulated in the 2012 high school season with 142 … Named the No. 5 attacker in the country by ESPN … Named Phillylacrosse.com’s Co-Player of the Year in 2011 and was All-Phillylacrosse.com in 2011 and 2012 … Led her squad to its first-ever PIAA State Championship, scoring 118 goals and notching 83 draw controls, 70 ground balls and 40 assists in 2011 and had game-winner in overtime to help team win state title again in 2012 … Scored 37 goals in eight postseason matches … USLacrosse Player of the Week … First Team All-Delco honoree … First Team All-Central League selection … PASLA Team Member … Scored the second-most goals in Pennsylvania as a junior … Ranked ninth in the country for goals in 2011 …. Played club lacrosse for the Brandywine Majors.

Barnes on Rutgers: I chose Rutgers University because it had everything that I was looking for in a University from size and beauty to prestige. All of the sports programs are known for their achievements though ethics and hard work. Coach Brand’s unique support and drive for success on and off the field as well as the team camaraderie were the ultimate deciding factors in my choosing Rutgers.

Amanda Currell GK Moorestown/Moorestown, N.J.

Prior to Rutgers: Goalkeeper for Moorestown High School as a junior and senior … As a senior, led her team to a 26-0 record and a No. 2 national ranking … 2012 Sectional, State Group, and State Champion … Named First Team All-County as a senior… Named an All-American Honorable Mention as a senior… Named a Burlington County Scholastic League All-Star… Led her high school to the Sectional and State Group Championship titles … Moorestown ranked No. 10 in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine in 2011 … Played club ball for South Jersey Select Lacrosse Pink 12 … 2008 and 2009 Champions at Lax by the Sea.

Currell on Rutgers: I selected Rutgers because of the academic excellence, rich history, and to be able to compete in the BIG EAST. I believe our team will be able to win the conference championship and contend for the national championship.

Addington Elliott D Fair Haven Regional/Rumson, N.J.

Prior to Rutgers: Four-year letterwinner for Fair Haven Regional … As a senior, named First Team All-Shore…Named the Defensive Player of the Year for Rumson Fair Haven … As a junior, named Second Team All-Shore … Senior captain … Won Group 2 Central Jersey State Section … Named to the All-Star Team for the Philly Showcase … Also played two years of varsity soccer … Played club with the T3 Shore.

Elliott on Rutgers: I chose Rutgers because the second I stepped on the campus, it felt like the right decision. The school pride and spirit is incredible. I am so excited to be a Scarlet Knight.

Madeline Hulsey M Annapolis Area Christian School/Sherwood Forest, Md.

Prior to Rutgers: Four-year varsity starter for Annapolis Area Christian … Named MIAA All-Star and all-county her junior and senior year … As a junior, controlled 175 draws – the league record in a single season … Racked up 100 points (65 goals, 35 assists) … Led the team in draw controls, groundballs and caused turnovers as a sophomore … Also played three years of varsity soccer and ran one year of varsity cross country … Played club with the MD United Lacrosse Club … With her club team, won numerous championships, including the Presidents Cup.

Hulsey on Rutgers: Choosing the right college includes so many factors. After visiting Rutgers, this decision was no longer difficult. I realized Rutgers has it “all.” By “all,” I mean a wide selection of degree programs, a lacrosse program led by a coach who’s loyalty and commitment to Rutgers is evident in her team, incredible facilities, and last but not least it’s proximity to New York City offers so many opportunities. I feel so fortunate to become a part of Rutgers University.

Kim Kolodny A Farmingdale/Farmingdale, N.Y.

Prior to Rutgers: Four-year letterwinner for Farmingdale … Named to the All American First Team in 2012 … Selected to the All-Long Island First Team in 2012 … All-Metro First Team honoree in 2012 … With 90 goals and 25 assists in her senior year, was the Farmingdale HS top goal scorer and point getter … Crowned NYS Class A Champion twice, as well as a two-time Long Island Class A Champion … Four-time Nassau County Class A Champion … All-county selection in 2011 and 2012 … Played with the LI Wave on the club circuit … With her club, nominated for the All-Tournament Team at the National Championship in 2010 … Won the Women’s Division National Tournament Championship in 2011.

Kolodny on Rutgers: Rutgers was my top choice and from the moment I stepped onto the campus, I knew it was where I wanted to end up. The school was exactly what I was looking for academically and after meeting Coach Brand and the players and seeing their talent and the determination they had to be at the top, I knew I didn’t have to look any further. I am honored and excited to now be a part of such a prestigious program.

Nikki McMonagle A Moorestown/Moorestown, N.J.

Prior to Rutgers: Letterwinner for Moorestown High School … Part of the Moorestown 2012 Tournament of Champions State Championship team, undefeated at 26-0, and ranked second in the country … Named a member of First Team All-South Jersey in her senior year … Selected to the First Team All-Courier Post team … Named a member of the South Jersey All-Star Team … Won the Group 3 State Championship in 2011, scoring 47 goals and dishing out 30 assists … Named a All-South Jersey Team Honorable Mention … Selected to the Courier-Post All-Group 3 Team … Twice named a First Team All-Star for the Burlington County Scholastic League … Also named to the first South New Jersey Team in the NCAA School Girls Division … Also starting guard on the varsity basketball team … Played with the South Jersey Select on the club circuit.

McMonagle on Rutgers: My decision to choose Rutgers was an easy one. As a jersey girl, I wanted to follow in the footsteps of so many talented players that have made Rutgers such a competitive lacrosse program. I am looking forward to becoming part of the great academic and athletic tradition at Rutgers.

Pennell on Rutgers: When I toured Rutgers’ campus, I immediately experienced the specific feeling everyone talks about when they discover the right school. I felt at ease, comfortable, excited and an immense amount of support from everyone I talked to. The feeling of comfort, future success, and conviction allowed me to choose Rutgers University to continue my academic and athletic endeavors.

Chrissy Schreiber M St. Anthony’s/East Meadow, N.J.

Prior to Rutgers: Letterwinner for St. Anthony’s High School under Corinne Lomangino … US Lacrosse All-American Midfielder as a senior … Two-time all-league selection … Helped her team to the 2010 and 2011 Catholic League Championship titles … Team ranked third nationally … Named program’s 2010 Midfielder of the Year … 2011 and 2012 team captain … Played club with the Long Island Express … Older brother plays lacrosse at Princeton … Father, Doug, the National Player of the Year at Maryland, was a two-time First Team All-America, played for the Terps 1973 NCAA championship team and is a member of the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Schreiber on Rutgers: I choose Rutgers to continue my education and athletic career because of the diverse academic opportunities and the chance to be part of a great lacrosse program under Coach Brand-Sias.
