The Philadelphia Wings announced today that their team captain, Brodie Merrill, will be conducting a defensive academy in the Philly area for the first time ever.

Hosted by the Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA, this program is designed to focus on the skills required by every defenseman to excel in their position. The academy will be held October 26-28, 2012 on the turf fields of Shipley’s mainline campus for boys ages 8-18.

Registration is first come, first served and out-of-town players are welcome.

“Brodie is one of the best players in the world and his resume is deep. We are proud that he is bringing his leadership style and defensive prowess to teach what years of success have taught him – how to hone your skills to compete at the highest levels of lacrosse,” said Michael French, president and co-owner of the Wings.

“I’m excited to bring the defensemen’s academy to Philadelphia,” said Merrill. “The position is unique and requires a different approach than other positions. We hope to pass on instruction that will help defensemen take their game to another level. Our goal is make each camper a better individual and team defender.”

This defense academy is open to boys ages 8-18 and will focus on developing lacrosse “IQ”, strengthening stick and footwork skills and more. This three day event will begin on Friday night from 7-9pm; Saturday 9am-3pm; concluding on Sunday from 9am-1pm, followed by an NCAA recruiting workshop from 1-3pm for players ages 13 and up.

Players from New York to Maryland are expected to participate along with area high schools and prep schools. Each participant will receive a Wings pinnie and lanyard; there will be prizes given away courtesy of Reebok.

The event is sponsored by the Philadelphia Wings and Reebok Lacrosse. This specialized skill development camp is for defensemen who want to take their game to another level.
