The Pennsylvania boys’ and girls’ high school teams opened play today with victories at the Brine National Lacrosse classic at Boyds, Md.
The PA boys’ team, coached by Strath Haven’s David Waldman, defeated New England, 5-4, as Jordyn Lacastro (Kiski Prep) had a goal and an assist. Other key players for PA included face-off specialist Dylan Protesto (Penncrest), defensemen Sean Delaney (Chestnut Hill Academy) and Ryan Gruett (Warwick) and midfielder Luke Gomez (Wissahickon).
“The defense was excellent and it was a good team effort,” Waldman said. “We shared the ball well and hustled. We won a lot of key groundballs.
“In the first game you’re getting to know each other. They were focused and gutted out a win.”
Pennsylvania will play the Australian U19 National team at 9 a.m. Monday and then face Virginia at 11 a.m. and Tennessee at 2 p.m.
The PA girls’ team – coached by Colleen Magarity (Germantown Academy, Northwestern) – edged Washington D.C., 8-7 as Elizabeth Brennan (Ridley) and Natalie Bulgier (Souderton) each scored twice.
PA will play the West at 10 a.m. Monday and Long Island at 1 p.m. before facing Syracuse at 4 p.m.
