Girls’ High repeated as Public League girls’ lacrosse champion today by downing previously-undefeated George Washington, 6-4, at the Gratz Supersite.

Girls’ High (11-4) advances to play in the first Public League-Catholic League championship game, which will determine the District 12 champ, on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Germantown Supersite. The Catholic League title game between Archbishop Carroll and Cardinal O’Hara is being played tonight.

GW – which had defeated Girls’ High in the two regular season games – closed its season at 13-1.

Girls’ High took an early 3-0 lead in the first half with unassisted goals from Somaly Kim, Chasity Mills and Danielle Holmes.

“We just played our hardest… we knew we were humble and we wanted this so bad,” said Mills. “We came and we played out hardest and we got the win.

“This is what we wanted all season. It really means a lot. We (lost to them) two times, we really wanted them but we came back two years in a row.”

In the second half, Mills scored twice and Tenee Pina added one goal on an assist from Jasmine Moragne to seal the win.

All of George Washington’s goals came in the second half. Christina Wong and Kayla Biddick each had one goal. Skipper Lawson scored twice.

“I told the girls in the huddle that I am so proud,” said George Washington head coach Bonnie Hughes. “Of my forty years of coaching, this was a team that had the kind of character and integrity that I’ve never had the pleasure of coaching before.

“They had an undefeated season and they scored over 170 goals, and they put everything they had into it. Just a couple of missed opportunities here and there were really the difference in the game.”

Girls High’s strong defensive performance in the first half was enough for its second title in two seasons. George Washington and Girls High have met in all three of the league’s championship games, but George Washington has not won since the inaugural season.

Girls High goalie Kripaya Varghese had 10 saves. Deidre Etim also had 10 saves for George Washington.
