Garnet Valley blanked Central Bucks East over the final three periods and claimed a 6-4 victory over the third-seeded Patriots today in the District 1 quarterfinals at Harriton.

Garnet Valley (16-5) advances to the semifinals to meet Downingtown West Tuesday night at Radnor at 8 p.m. West toppled Abington, 7-4.

The Jaguars trailed 4-1 when East’s Matt Hurley scored with 39 seconds left in the opening period. After that, east was held scoreless and managed only five more shots on goal.

The Jags’ defense featured Under Armour All-Americans Ryan Guittare and Ryan Lehamn, Steven Elf, and long pol Zach Jones as well as defensive middies Jonathan Vandenberg and Tony Minford.

Meanwile, the Garnet Valley offense got untrack, helped by the work at the face-off X by Zach Penfil (11 of 13 draws). Vail Urso (two goals) scored 20 seconds into the second half to make it 4-3 and Jule Raucci (three goals) tied it later in the period.

Raucci then put his team ahead with 6:53 left in the final frame.

“Our defense was strong as usual,” said Urso. “Sometimes we don’t come out with a real good start, but our defense is that good they it can hold any team at any point in the game. I think we played the best they could pay. They figured out what East was doing and capitalized on that by giving us the ball.”

Garnet Valley, the 11th seed, also knocked off sixth-seeded Pennsbury, 6-5.

“Our defense is playing unbelievable,” said Urso. “Our offense is starting to click and get together. We are becoming an offense, not a bunch of good players.

“I think now we are controlling the ball and not throwing it away with dumb passes. I think we are confident that we can beat anybody if we play our game.”
