Sean Giampietro scored with 2:53 remaining in overtime Saturday to lift Salesianum School to a brilliant 11-10 victory over previously-undeefated Chatham (N.J.), in the final game of the Nike Checking for Cancer Lacrosse Invitational at Haverford School.

Giampietro, a junior who had three goals and two assists, took a feed from freshman Dillon Walker (two goals, one assist) and made a dodge before blasting home the game-winner for the defending Delaware state champions.

Chatham entered play at 6-0. Salesianum is 5-1, having lost only to MIAA power Calvert Hall.

“This is huge for Delaware; we are stepping up and showing the nation we’re there,” said Giampietro. “We have some tricky plays and that one was one of our specials. I caught it gave a good move and finished it.”

The Sals had taken a 10-9 lead when Giampetro fed Jay Kelly (two goals) with less than four minutes remaining. But Chatham’s Sam Carson tied it with less than two minutes remaining.

Troy Reeder also scored twice for the Sals while Craig Zebrowski and Kyle Gangemi each added one. Matt Barone made 14 saves in goal.

“Our coaches preached hard work and it paid off,” said Giampietro.

Salesianum is hoping to break into the national rankings. They also will be playing Saturday at Malvern Prep and later in the year at Penn Charter.

“This year we stepped up the schedule and we’re only playing nine in-state games,” Giampietro said. “We are showing we can compete with anyone in the top 50.”
