The Germantown Friends School girls’ lacrosse team enjoyed a cultural experience last weekend as it hosted Cheltenham Ladies College from England. Cheltenham arrived on Friday and had a joint practice with GFS at Fields and then dinner at the Melby’s house for more laughter, food, swimming and dancing.

Germantown Friends (white uniforms) and the Cheltenham Ladies College from England joined together for a weekend of lacrosse and exchange of cultures

Saturday morning both the varsity and the JV squads played a “match on the pitch” which was “gloriously played.” GFS came out on top in both games, winning the varsity game, 19-8, and the JV contest, 14-1.

Cheltenham was a very athletic and feisty team, but the Tigers were able to put together some excellent midfield connections to deliver the ball upfield quickly. Sophie Mercuris had five goals, Annie Morrissey had six goals and five draw controls, Lauren Shinn had six saves in goal, Isabella DiDio had three goals and four draw controls while Katherine Walden grabbed three draws. Alex Clarke lead the team in ground balls with three while goalie Lauren Shinn grabbed two as well. Katharine Cusick, Caroline Myran, Grayson Melby and Annie Tyson each added one goal.

The weekend was rounded out by some Philadelphia sightseeing and bowling on Saturday night. The players became fast friends, were worthy competitors and enjoyed a very special weekend of international lacrosse.

The Tigers are 4-0.

This week GFS plays Lower Merion on Friday awayand Agnes Irwin on Saturday at the Checking for Cancer Tournament at The Haverford School at 1 p.m.
