The Drexel women’s lacrosse team opened its season today by defeating George Washington, 15-10, at Vidas Field.
Six different Dragons scored. Sophomore midfielder Amanda Norcini (Conestoga) and Alyse Maiden each knocked in four goals. Redshirt freshman Alissa Watts scored two goals in her first collegiate appearance and senior Jaclyn Klunder (Conestoga) had a goal and four assists while senior Charlotte Wood (Conestoga) scored three second-half goals.
Drexel’s Kelli Joran (Downingtown East) and Watts gave the Dragons a solid 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Dragons controlled the turf, until George Washington scored back-to-back goals by Rachel Mia and Casey Disharoon. Watts tallied her second goal followed by Maiden to regain the lead, 4-2.
The Colonials went on a three-goal run and tied the game, 5-5. At 9:01, Maiden answered back with a free position goal. George Washington won 12 of 14 of the game’s draw controls, which allowed them to maintain possession and momentum in the first. The Colonials led by three, 8-5, at half.
The Dragons opened up the second half with six unanswered goals to take back the lead, 11-8 with still 15 minutes remaining in the contest. George Washington’s Nicole Lacey scored an unassisted goal at 13:27. Two minutes later, Drexel went on another four-goal spurt and held onto the lead until time expired.
Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea started her first full game for the Dragons and had a season-high of 10 saves on the day. George Washington’s Mackenzie Jones made six saves. Teammate Jess Hicks played the last 13:27 in the cage for the Colonials.
Drexel hosts Saint Joseph’s at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22 at Vidas Field.
