The University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team fell to second-ranked University of Maryland, 21-4, in the Blue Hens’ 2012 season opener Thursday afternoon at the UM Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
Blue Hen freshman midfielder Caitlin McCartney (Archbishop Wood) scored three goals during her Blue Hen debut while sophomore Chelsea Fay (Villa Maria Academy) accounted for the other Delaware score. Delaware goalkeepers Alex Zaugra (four saves) and Tori Zorovich (six saves) combined to post 10 saves on the day.
Delaware (0-1), which returned four starters to a young lineup this spring for second-year head coach Kateri Linville, will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 22, when the Blue Hens host Villanova in the home opener at Delaware Stadium at 4 p.m.
Maryland, which captured the 2010 NCAA Division I national title and was national runner-up last spring, improved to 2-0 with the victory. The Terrapins gave head coach Cathy Reese her 100th career victory with the Terrapins. Maryland opened the season last Sunday with a 19-8 victory over Delaware’s Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary.
Brooke Griffin led Maryland with five goals and an assist while Karri Ellen Johnson added four goals and three assists, Kelly McPartland added three goals and an assist, Alex Aust scored three times, and Kristy Black contributed two goals and three assists.
Maryland scored the game’s first nine goals before McCartney broke the string with her first career goal with 12:50 left in the first half. The Terrapins moved on to a 14-1 lead at the break.
Delaware came out strong in the second half as Fay scored just under three minutes into the stanza and McCartney tallied her second score less than two minutes later to cut the deficit to 14-3. But Maryland then scored the next six goals before the Hens got their final tally on another McCartney goal with 2:00 left to play.
Maryland is one of five Top 20 nationally-ranked teams on Delaware’s schedule this spring.
