Becky Davis, head women’s lacrosse coach at The University of Scranton, has announced that junior goalkeeper Kathleen Smart (Hatboro, Pa./Archbishop Wood), senior defender Alison Gilroy (Elmira, NY/Seton Catholic Central), senior attacker Kaela Mahon (Avon-by-the-Sea, NJ/Saint Rose)have been named captains for the upcoming 2012 season.
Gilroy and Smart will anchor a Royal defensive unit that held 10 of 16 opponents to 10-or-fewer goals and an average of 9.87 goals per game last season. Gilroy is a three-year letter-winner who has appeared in 31 games in her career and has twice been named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.
In just two seasons, Smart is already ranked among the all-time leaders in Scranton history. She is second in saves per game (6.96) and fourth in wins (11) and total saves (195). Last spring Smart started all 16 games, made 126 saves, posted a goals against average of 9.99, and had a won-loss record of 10-6. She was also named Landmark Conference Player of the Week for the period ending March 6, 2011, was twice named The University of Scranton Athlete of the Week (March 6, 2011; April 10, 2011), and was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.
Mahon has been a consistent scoring threat on the Royal front line in each of the past three seasons. In 45 career games, she has 60 goals and 13 assists for 73 total points. She enters her senior year 17th in goals, 18th in shot attempts (140), and 20th in total points in Scranton history. In 2010 she was named to the Landmark Conference Academic Honor Roll.
The Royals, coming off a 10-win season and a berth in the Landmark Conference postseason tournament, will open their 2012 season on Wednesday, February 29, against Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
