William and Mary lacrosse head coach Christine Halfpenny has announced that seven student-athletes will join the program for the 2011-2012 academic year. The talented incoming class includes three midfielders, two attackers, a defender and a goalkeeper.
“I am very excited to welcome this strong class of student-athletes to William & Mary,” Halfpenny said. “Top to bottom this class brings experience to each position on the field. These players are outstanding students and strong athletes who are hungry to compete and win at the highest level. We are looking forward to seeing their personalities and styles mesh well with the returning squad but also continue to raise the level of our team as we strive towards a CAA Championship.”
The Tribe has experienced tremendous success in recent years, as it has consistently ranked among the nation’s top 20 and has earned four consecutive double-digit win seasons. The following is a brief look at the Tribe’s 2011-12 recruiting class:
Prep: Three-year letterwinner for head coach Amy Orutt at Conestoga … Honored as an Academic All-American following her senior season … All-Central League Honorable Mention selection in 2011 after totaling 15 draw controls, 43 ground balls, a goal and an assist … Selected as the team’s Unsung Hero in 2011 … Also earned four letters in indoor track and one letter in cross country … Helped track team win the state championship in 2008 … Named to First Honor Roll … National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction … Earned the Service and Leadership Award … Member of the National Honor Society, FLITE and the French Club … Personal: Daughter of Holly Henry … Brother, Andrew, plays club soccer at Johns Hopkins.
Prep: Three-year letterwinner for head coaches Annie Richards and Brooke Ireland at Collegiate … All-LIS selection in 2011 … Served as a team captain during her senior season … Member of the Virginia National Team in 2009 and 2010 … Played for the Geronimo Elite Club team from 2008-10 … Played varsity tennis for two seasons and served as a captain in 2011 … member of the A/B Academic Honor Roll from 2008-11 … Volunteered with the Interact Community Service Club, Church Youth Group, Mission Trips and “The Match” (online student newspaper) … Personal: Daughter of Scott and Sharon Johnson … Mother played tennis at the University of Richmond.

Prep: Four-year letterwinner for head coach Nancy Weber Haws at Western Albemarle … Served as a team captain in 2010 and 2011 … Honored as the Jefferson District Player of the Year in 2011 … Totaled 98 goals, 18 assists, 125 draw controls and 79 ground balls as a senior … First-team all-district selection as both a junior and a senior … Second-team all-region honoree in 2010 … Second-team all-district choice as a sophomore … Garnered the Claudia L. Dodson Integrity in Sports Award … Also earned four letters in basketball, serving as a captain twice … A two-time first-team all-district selection who was honored as the Jefferson District Player of the Year as a senior … Averaged a double-double in 2010 and 2011 … Member of the Honor Roll all four years … Member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, Honor Council, World Culture Club and Spanish Club … Personal: Daughter of Christopher and Catherine Shaffrey … Father played basketball at the Citadel … Mother swam and rowed at Mount Holyoke.
