Women’s lacrosse preview: Philly grads figure to be keys to Georgetown’s success in 2011

A number of Philly grads will play key roles for the defending BIG EAST champion Georgetown women’s lacrosse team, which opens its season Saturday against No. 2 Northwestern in Washington D.C. at 1 p.m. The Hoyas are ranked No. 6 in the IWLCA poll this week.

Senior captain Logan McCraw (Conestoga) will lead the Hoya defense after a breakout season in 2010. McCraw was an All-America honoree and a First Team All-BIG EAST selection who has 40 ground balls and 32 caused turnovers.

Fellow captain and junior Kelly Barnes (28 GB, 22 CT, 19 DC) was an All-BIG EAST honoree and a Regional All-American after moving from the midfield last year. She had five goals and one assist as well as 28 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Both McCraw and Barnes begin the season on the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.

At midfield attack, senior captain Mary Beth Brophy (Archbishop Carroll) returns after starting every game last year and posting 12 goals with two assists.
Two newcomers from Radnor High also will by vying for time at midfield – junior transfer Molly Early (from Richmond) and freshman Kelyn Freedman, the 2010 Player of the Year and the consenus No. 1 recruit. Also, freshman Courtney Caputo (Springside School) will be looking for time at midfield.

Junior Mary Cannon (Agnes Irwin) is a reserve on defense.
