Women’s lacrosse: Kennett’s Ferree member of Florida Southern’s inaugural class

Florida Southern coach Kara Reber has announced the inaugural recruiting class for the women’s lacrosse program which gets set to begin its first season of competition (Division II) in February 2012.

The class includes Kennett grad Katie Ferree as well as Hempfield’s Joanna Youssef and Caitlin Chase of Holy Cross (N.J.).

“I am very excited to work with this great group of talented student-athletes. We were able to bring in talent from all over the US as well as a few transfers, which will help tremendously in our first season,” said head coach Kara Reber. “I am looking forward to what this team can achieve in their first year and begin building for the years to come. This is an exciting time for Florida Southern and lacrosse in this state and I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to build from the ground up.”

Of the 27 newcomers, 20 of them are freshmen, represent 13 different states: California (1), Florida (2), Maryland (5), Michigan (1), Nevada (1), New Hampshire (1), New Jersey (1), New York (4), North Carolina (1), Ohio (1), Pennsylvania (2), Rhode Island (2), and Texas (1). The Moccasin newcomers for 2012:

Katie Ferree – M – Kennett Square, PA (Kennett HS); SEPA; team captain her senior year … Scored 187 goals in her career, including 45 her senior year … third team Ches-mont league in 2011 … honorable mention in 2009 and 2010 … named all-area athlete by Daily Local News.

Joanna Youssef – A – Mountville, PA (Hempfield HS); Lanco Elite Lacrosse; lead the team in points and scoring in 2009 and 2010 … 2010 most valuable defender in field hockey.

Caitlin Chase – A – Mt. Lauel, N.J. (Holy Cross HS); South Jersey Devils; Attack player of the year twice … scored 56 goals and 54 assist in 2011.

The Moccasins will begin their regular season February 19, when they host Lindenwood at 1:00 p.m.
