Bucknell head coach Randall Goldsborough has announced the election of juniors Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) and Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) and sophomore Sophie Kleinert (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich Academy) as team captains for the 2012 season.

Hurwitz, Kleinert and Wendling are all returning starters, and all three figure to play important roles as the Bison look to move back up in the Patriot League women’s lacrosse ranks.

Hurwitz played in 15 games and started 11 at attack in 2011, and she posted career-best numbers. Hurwitz tied for the team lead with 29 goals, and her 33 points ranked third on the squad. Among Hurwitz’s big performances last season was a six-goal outburst in a win over Manhattan. She also tallied four goals against Navy and Howard and three each against American and Lafayette.

“Madi is the complete vocal leader,” said Goldsborough. “She pushes her teammates through workouts both on the field and in the weight room. “We can always rely on her to motivate her teammates in tight circumstances, which will help us achieve much higher goals this season.”

Kleinert appeared in all 16 games with 14 starts as a midfielder a year ago. She tallied six goals and four assists, and she ranked third on the team with 22 draw controls. Kleinert also picked up 11 ground balls for the Bison. Her scoring increased in the latter part of the season, as she produced at least one goal in each of the last four games of her rookie campaign, including a two-goal performance against Columbia.

“Sophie has so much drive and determination in her, and I’m very impressed with how she puts it all out on the field,” said Goldsborough. “She is really coming into her own as the player who will stop at nothing to be successful. She is a true ‘grit’ player who competes with passion every day, which is exactly how we want to define ourselves as a program.”

Wendling has started all 33 games over the last two seasons. She has been primarily a close defender but has also recently seen time at midfield. Wendling tallied four goals and three assists last season, while also ranking among the team leaders in caused turnovers (15), ground balls (18) and draw controls (23). She picked up her first career goal against Duquesne, and then added tallies against Lafayette, Manhattan and Colgate.

“Adrienne’s work ethic is unmatched both on and off the field,” said Goldsborough. “She plays hard and studies hard, which makes her an excellent example and resource for our young team. “I have no doubt that under her guidance we will show that there is a new era beginning with our lacrosse team.”

Goldsborough is back for her second stint as Bucknell’s head coach, and she is working to mold a very young squad in 2012. Hurwitz and Wendling are the lone players with two or more years of experience in the program, as the Bison roster primarily consists of sophomores and freshmen.

The Bison open up the 2012 campaign at Duke on Feb. 4.
