Kyle Wharton (Haverford School) scored three goals and Matt Dolente (Malvern Prep) won 16 of 22 face-offs to help Johns Hopkins claim a thrilling 10-9 victory Sunday over North Carolina before 25,115 fans at the Konica Minolta Big City Classic at New Meadowlands Stadium.
Sophomore midfielder Lee Coppersmith scored his only goal of the game with 1:52 remaining in the fourth quarter to win it.
The victory improves No. 5 JHU’s record to 7-2 and snaps a four-game losing streak to the No. 4 Tar Heels, who slip to 7-3 with the loss.
Freshman midfielder Ryan Creighton (Malvern Prep) had a groundball for the Tar Heels.
Tucker Durkin (La Salle) led the Blue Jay defense and picked up one groundball.
Syracuse 13, Duke 11
The top-ranked Orangemen jumped out to a 9-2 halftime lead and held off a late charge by the No. 3 Blue Devils to post a narrow victory in the nightcap at the Konica Minolta Big City Classic.
Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion) had two goals and two assists for Duke (8-3), which had a seven-game win streak snapped. Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) made nine saves and defenseman Billy Conners (Malvern Prep) had two groundballs.
