The Federation of International Women’s U-19 World Championships kick off today in Hannover, Germany with the defending champion USA squad a favorite.
Opening ceremonies were held at noon locally (6 a.m. EST) and the Czech Republic defeated host Germany, 12-8, in the opening game.
The schedule kicks into high gear Thursday with five games scheduled in pool play, including Australia vs. England, Canada vs. Haudenosaunee and the U.S. vs. Japan.
The US team features captain and midfielder Taylor Trimble (Episcopal Academy/headed to Duke) and Allie Murray (Downingtown East/Notre Dame).
The United States will be looking for its fourth straight U-19 world championship. Krystin Porcella, the head lacrosse coach at John Carroll (Md.) guides the team after serving as an assistant on the 2007 gold medal-winning team.
