Taylor Trimble scored four goals and added two assists and Lindsey Reder made nine saves in goal as host Episcopal Academy defeated two-time defending Delaware state champion Cape Henlopen, 12-6, today in a girls’ lacrosse opener.
EA, the No. 1 team in the PA Media and Phillylacrosse.com Rankings, is the No. 23 team in the ESPN RISE Powerade national poll. Cape Henlopen entered play as the No. 16 team in the ESPN RISE rankings.
EA led, 4-1, at halftime, and never looked back. Ali Singley added two goals and an assist. Grace van Arkel and MC Curran each added a goal and an assist while Kristen Hinckley, Claire MacManus, Blake McHugh (three assists) and Taryn Gallagher each scored once.
Defensive standouts included Maggie Forker, Kelly Martellucci and Claire MacManus. Reder allowed just two goals.
Sara Young scored three goals and Jacki Colveski added a pair for the Vikings. Gina Voss had eight saves.
Penn Charter 13, Friends’ Central 9
Kate Higgins scored five goals and Blaine Steinberg added two goals and two assists while Amanda Fleming and Emma Ebert each scored twice to help lead the Quakers to the opening-day win.
Katherine O’Donnell and Lauren Matt also scored once each for PC.
Shipley School 12, Springside School 7
The Gators opened their season with a victory as junior Avery Safford collected six goals and four caused turnovers. Sophie Katz added one goal and four assists while Sophie Cummins added three goals and Teddy Chase had a goal, two assists and three caused turnovers.
Solid defense for Shipley was turned in by Marcela Heywood, Lauren Scutt, Alayna Harris and Jordyn Turner. Freshman goalie Madison Bailey turned away seven shots in the victory.
