Sophomore midfielder Ruth Barry said she is coming east from St. Louis, Mo., to participate in the inaugural Philly Showcase Camp to gain exposure in a major lacrosse hotbed and to compete at a camp with nationally-known coaches.

Sophomore Ruth Barry of John Burroughs in St. Louis, MO, is coming to participate in the inaugural Philly Showcase Camp for girls in the Classes of 2013 and 2014

Barry plays for John Burroughs High, a perennial Missouri state power. But the Barry said the chance to play at a camp led by Penn coach Karin Brower Corbett and many other top college coaches was a major draw.

“There aren’t as many (top) programs in the Midwest, so coming out east is the way to go to get good opportunities,” said Barry, who is in her second year as a starter. “For recruiting or playing lacrosse at the highest level, this is where I need to go.”

The Philly Showcase Camp is a three-day, two-night overnight showcase and instructional camp with a limited capacity for 216 high school girls’ lacrosse players in the classes of 2013 and 2014. The Camp will be held at Albright College in Reading from July 19-21.

Under the direction of Brower Corbett, who has guided the Quakers to three national semifinals in the past five seasons, the Philly Showcase includes three days of games and instruction, as well as all meals and lodging in the Albright College dining halls and dorms.

On the field, the girls will be divided into rosters, with each roster overseen by a prominent college coach. The teams will play a series of games interspersed between detailed instructional sessions.

Additionally, all games at the Showcase Camp will be professionally filmed, catalogued and indexed by Showcase video partner Krossover Intelligence.

“The Penn coach is known to be amazing,” said Barry, who has been to camps at UMass and Northwestern and also will compete at a camp this summer in Maryland. “It will be really great to get some experience with her.

“I also like the fact there are only 12 teams and each is coached by a college coach. This is a smaller field than other camps.”

The lead instructors feature a varied group, some from Philly (Delaware coach Kateri Linville, La Salle coach Candace Taglianetti and Cabrini coach Jackie Neary) as well as coaches from North Carolina, Vanderbilt, St. Bonaventure, and Marquette (see list below).

The registration fee is $495.

The Philly Showcase Camp is for high school players in the years of 2013 and 2014 serious about improving their games and working closely with some of the best college lacrosse coaches in the nation.
