Registration continues for the Team EC/RN 5K Run/Walk, which will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Hatboro-Horsham High School Stadium.
The event is being held in memory of Edward Coombs and Robert W. Nagel who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in August. All proceeds will go to the Edward Coombs Foundation, which funds a scholarship.
Edward Coombs was a 2010 graduate of Hatboro-Horsham High School who went on to play NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse at Marist College. Coombs had a standout freshman season for the Red Foxes. He was a 2010 All-Suburban One Continental Conference midfielder, who helped the Hatters to an 18-6 record and a share of the league title with Central Bucks East, as well as a state playoff berth. Nagel also graduated from HH in 2010 and was a key player on the title team.
Jackie DePietro, a Hatboro-Horsham senior who was a friend of Coombs and remains close to both families, is one of the race organizers. She said the race is expected to draw well over 650 people. There will awards for the six age group winners of the 5K race and there will also be raffle baskets and sales of wrist bands and sweat bands.
Donations can be made to the Foundation at the race.
“We wanted to do something positive for them and have an event that people can remember them by,” she said. “We want to keep their memory going.
“I think the event helps, especially to help people understand what happened. I think it’s just another way to bring the community together and bring everybody that loved both of them together in one place.
“I want them to be remembered for who they were. They were great people and they put smiles on people’s faces. If you knew them a little bit, you wouldn’t just walk by them. You’d be in the conversation even if you weren’t the closest of friends.”
Signups are online at the Team EC/RN Facebook page.
