Freshman Westy Hopkins (La Salle) contributed two goals and freshman Liam O’Connor (Haverford School) won 7 of 10 face-offs and scooped five groundballs to help No. 6 Notre Dame hand No. 5 Duke a 12-7 defeat today in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Division I men’s championship game at the Sunshine Classic in Jacksonville.
O’Connor’s high school teammate, Duke sophomore goalie Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) made six saves, but was relieved in the fourth period with his team trailing, 7-5.
Rutgers 11, Manhattan 3
Goalie Joe Donnelly (Radnor) made two saves as the Scarlet Knights improved to 2-0.
Vermont 9, Colgate 4
Freshman Ahmad Zachary (Lower Merion) collected a goal, two groundballs and a caused turnover as Vermont won its opener.
Andrew Mould (Hill School) had two goals for Colgate (0-2) in defeat.
Georgetown 15, Jacksonville 12
Midfielder Kurt Watkinson (Haverford School) had two groundballs and two caused turnovers for the Hoyas in their opener at the Sunshine Classic.
