Matt Finor (Council Rock South/Scranton Univ.) cleanly pinch-clamped the face-off, picked up the ground ball and fed Matt Dachowski in overtime for his second goal of the game to lead the Bandits Lacrosse Club to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Philly Bill’s Dills Wednesday in the Lenape Lacrosse Company/Bucks-Mont Summer Lacrosse League championship game at Holicong Park in Buckingham.
Undefeated Philly Bill’s Dills had won two straight championships; the two teams shared the crown two years ago when the title game was called due to lightning.
The Bandits were coming off an exciting, overtime victory over North Penn Alumni in the semifinals.
Philly Bill’s Dills took the early lead on as Dane Mangin (Archbishop Wood/Ursinus) opened the scoring on an assist from brother Dustin (Archbishop Wood/Gwynedd Mercy). The defenses then took over on both sides as Derrin Mangin (Archbishop Wood/Ursinus) of the Dills and John McShea (St. Joseph’s Prep/Scranton) for the Bandits tightened up and played a physical style of lacrosse not generally seen during the summer.
After goals from Craig Hunsberger (Widener) from Philly Bill’s Dills and Matt Dachowski (Central Bucks South/Scranton) for the Bandits, the game was 2-1 at the half.
In the second half, the defensive struggle continued until Bob MacArthur (Catholic) scored a goal to knot it up at 2-2 and begin a brief flurry of back and forth goals in which Dane Mangin scored his second off an assist from Jason Merola (Pennsbury/King’s) and Dave Lafaman (Montgomery, NJ/Scranton) answered with an assist from Mike Kelly. Goals from Kevin Sonderschafer (Central Bucks South/Chestnut Hill College) for the Bandits and Brian Kutler (Archbishop Wood/DeSales) for the Dills made the game 4-4 and forced over-time.
