Senior long stick midfielder Adam Mojica (Springfield-Delco) is a key returnee for the Hofstra men’s lacrosse team as it begins its quest for a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship.
The Pride began practice Thursday at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. Hofstra opens its 2011 regular season on Tuesday, February 15 at home against Colgate University.
The Pride, coming off their third consecutive NCAA Championship Tournament appearance, return 31 players, including eight starters, from last year’s 9-5 team. The Pride, who return 10 of their top 11 scorers, lost just 14 of their 181 goals in 2010 to graduation.
Mojica was an All-CAA second team pick in 2010 when he collected 32 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers. An All-American pick in 2007, Mojica was a member of Springfield-Delco’s Central League championship squad in 2005.
The defense also features senior All-CAA second team selection Mike Skudin and sophomore Cody Solaja, an All-CAA Rookie team selection. Senior short-stick middie Stephen DeNapoli is another standout.
Hofstra returns all three starting attackmen led by the senior All-American honorable mentions Jay Card (31 goals and 22 assists), and Jamie Lincoln (team-high 33 goals and 20 assists). Senior starter Stephen Bentz (29 goals and 12 assists) also returns to the starting line-up.
Hofstra lost just one starter from a deep midfield unit and return junior starters Brad Loizeaux (All-CAA first team pick who tallied 19 goals and 11 assists), Kevin Ford and sophomore All-CAA Rookie team pick Adrian Sorichetti. Hofstra also returns both goalies that split time last season. Junior Andrew Gvozden enters the new season as the starter with sophomore Rob Bellairs serving as his back-up.
