Breaking down today’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) girls’ quarterfinal matchups:
Downingtown East (District 1, No. 1) vs. Cocalico (3-2) at Gov. Mifflin, Shillington, 2 p.m.
The Cougars (23-1), winners of 21 straight games, are the heavy favorite in this contest.
They are ranked No. in the PIAA Media Rankings and No. 16 by ESPN RISE.
Downingtown East advanced by holding off Upper Dublin, 13-10, in a game when the Cougars had a 10-goal lead and saw the Cards rattle off eight straight goals at the end of the content.
Cocalico was the runner-up in the Lancaster-Lebanon League as well as the District 3 tournament. The Eagles advanced by toppling Wyoming Seminary, 15-12.
Springfield-Delco (1-3) vs. Great Valley (1-4), at Harriton, 3 p.m.
These teams know each other well; they met in the District 1 consolation game last week and Springfield-Delco (21-3) claimed a 15-9 victory for the third-place spot.
Springfield-Delco – ranked No. 3 in the PA Media Rankings and No. 32 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 – advanced by whipping Emmaus, 17-3. The Cougars were the state runner-up last year and this season were one of four teams to share in the Central League championship.
Great Valley (20-3) advanced with a 13-12 overtime win over Manheim Township. The Patriots, runners-ups in the Ches-Mont League, lost in the first round of states last year.
Archbishop Carroll (12-1) vs. Garnet Valley (1-2) at Harriton, 5 p.m.
This another intriguing playoff game between Philly teams, but these squads have never met in the post-season
Carroll (18-3), the 11-time champion of the Catholic League, toppled Boyertown, 19-14, in the opening round. The Patriots have been eliminated in the first round of the PIAA tourney in each of the past two years. They are ranked No. 4 in the PA Media Rankings and No. 34 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50.
Garnet Valley (21-3), shared the Central League crown and is making its first PIAA appearance. The Jaguars defeated Harriton, 18-10, in the first round and are ranked No. 43 in the ESPN RISE FAB 50 despite being No. 2 in the PA Media Rankings.
Penn Manor (3-3) vs. Sewickley Academy (7-2) at Penn State, 6 p.m.
Penn Manor (19-4) advanced by dumping District 7 champion Seneca Valley, 18-10 and would be considered a favorite in this game.
The Panthers (13-7) routed States College, 18-7, in the first round.
