Nicole Barretta scored three goals while McKenzie Rafferty, Ashley Poli and Emily Solenberger each scored two as Downingtown East defeated Upper Dublin, 13-10, today in the opening round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) girls’ lacrosse playoffs at West Chester East.
The District 1 champion Cougars (23-1) advance to meet District 3 runner-up Cocalico in the quarterfinals Saturday at a site and time to be determined. Cocalico advanced to downing Wyoming Seminary, 15-12.
Upper Dublin, the District 1 seventh-place finisher, closes its season at 17-7.
Downingtown East led, 7-2, at halftime, and had a seemingly comfortable 12-2 lead late in the game when the Cards rallied and went on an 8-0 run.
Linnea Faccenda, Haley Nelson and Meghan Hubbard each scored once for Downingtown East and Allie Murray was the winning goalie.
Kelly Cross had four goals and two assists and Emily Hitchings had four goals and one assist for the Cards.
“Upper Dublin played with a lot of heart and there was a letdown at the end of the game with the big lead,” said Cougars coach Caitlin Barbakoff. “You want your team to play 50 minutes,. I am lokoing at it as a good wakeup call.
“We got sloppy and they hustled. Hopefully, we’ll learn form that. From here on in, we have to pick it up a notch.”
Said UD coach Dee Cross: “We just started winning every draw control and went down and started scoring. Their defense fell apart, and we were scoring a goal a minute.
“With 30 seconds left, they called a timeout. I said, ‘You made the district champions call a timeout with 30 seconds left and a three-goal lead. That’s got to say something.’ We just ran out of time. If the clock hadn’t been running because they were up by 11 – we hit five posts in the game.
“It was unbelievable. A few more minutes on the clock, and we could have won. We had momentum. It was just crazy.”
