Blaine Fleming scored with 28 seconds left in overtime today to give St. Joseph’s Prep a dramatic 11-10 victory over Manheim Township in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) boys’ lacrosse tournament at Spring-Ford High.

The Hawks (18-4) advance to the semifinals Tuesday when they will meet the winner of today’s all-District 7 quarterfinals game between Mount Lebanon and Sewickley Academy.

Manheim Township, the District 3 champion, finishes at 22-2,

The Blue Streaks, who entered the day ranked No. 2 in the PA Media Rankings in the PIAA behind Conestoga, held the lead most of the game and led, 10-8, with 5:20 to play in regulation.

But the Hawks’ Brad James scored with 2:15 left to make it 10-9 and then sent it into overtime when Jeff Heath (four goals, one assist) scored with :45 to play in regulation following a Manheim turnover.

Manheim had jumped to a quick 4-0 edge in the first period, but St. Joe’s Prep rallied to tie, 4-4. Manheim later held a 9-5 edge in the fourth period.

The winning goal was set up by the St. Joseph’s Prep defense, which played brilliant lacrosse in the final minutes of regulation and in overtime. Pat Farrell stripped a Manheim player and Connor Dent picked up the loose ball that led to the winning possession.

“We were locking off our guy, then applying heavy pressure on them,” said Farrell. “We had to get the ball back, my guy slipped under me but I got the trail check and Connor Dent came in and got the ball.”

Also for St. Joe’s Prep, face-off specialist Jake O’Briien (14 of 23) had a strong game, winning over 60 percent of his draws.

“Going into OT, I just knew it was crunch time,” O’Brien said. “I lost the first one but I knew we’d get it back…the defense played great…Pat Farrell got the check and coach called a great time out and the offense got rolling from there.”

Pat Swanick added two goals and Corey Scheuerle had a goal and two assists while Tim Browne and Rob Watts each scored once,.
