Team Philadelphia claimed the silver medal and a combined Philly/Delaware/South Jersey (PDJ) team finished with the bronze last week in girls’ lacrosse at the Jewish Community Center Maccabi Games at Barrack Academy.
The Maccabi Games, held each year, offer competition for Jewish boys and girls aged 13-to-16 from around the world in 14 sports. The lacrosse competition was one of many held in the Philly region.
Team Philly played a strong game, but fell to Baltimore, 17-15, in the championship game. The PDJ team defeated Great Britain, 8-6, for the bronze.
In the gold medal game, Philly went up, 5-1, but Baltimore rallied and the game was close the rest of the way. Philly’s top scorers were Alex Silvera, Catherine Perlmutter, Eliza Mantelmacher, Avital Schweitzer, Lauren Matt, Julia Greitzer and Jess Herman.
Other key contributors were goalie Alex Freedman, Sam Braver, Vanessa Auritt, Andie Edelson and Maddie Philips
“It was a great game and the tournament had great competition throughout,” said Philly coach Eve Wilderman. “The girls made great connections with the Baltimore girls as well as the British team.
“All the girls showed fantastic sportsmanship and spirit. Our girls were a pleasure to coach.”
