Penn State freshman goalie Austin Kaut (Springfield-Delco) has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 20.
This is the third time that Kaut has been named Rookie of the Week and the first time he has be named Player of the Week, sharing that honor with Towson’s Matt Hughes (Central Bucks East).
Kaut, a first-time CAA Player of the Week winner and now three-time rookie of the week, tallied a current national-best 25 saves in Penn State’s 8-7 upset win at No. 10 Massachusetts Saturday. Kaut’s .781 single-game save percentage is a career-best, while his .669 (99/148) season save percentage ranks among the league’s best among mainstay keepers.
Penn State is now 3-3 overall, 1-o in Colonial Athletic Association action. The Nittany Lions host St. Joseph’s on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a CAA contest at Bigler Field.
Meanwhile, sophomore attackman Hughes recorded a pair of three-goal games as the Tigers split their two games last week.
After scoring three goals in the Tigers’ 14-11 loss against Navy on Tuesday night, Hughes added three more goals, including the eventual game-winner with 9:50 remaining in regulation, to lead Towson to a 9-8 victory over fifth-ranked Stony Brook. It was the Tigers’ first win over a top five opponent since April 27, 1996, a 13-12 victory over fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field.
“Matt came through with some terrific goals for us when we needed him on Saturday,” Towson Coach Tony Seaman said. “He was a very important part of our win over Stony Brook.”
Hughes, who scored 13 goals with 4 assists as a freshman, has scored nine of his 10 goals in the last four games. He also had a “hat trick” in the Tigers’ 11-3 victory over Mount St. Mary’s on March 5.
Now 2-4 on the season, Hughes and the Tigers will open their Colonial Athletic Association schedule on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the University of Delaware for a 1 p.m. game against the defending CAA champion Blue Hens.
