Three members of Twist Lacrosse Club helped Bridgewater-Raritan High claim the New Jersey Group IV state championship Thursday by defeating Hunterdon Central, 9-6, at Ridge High in Bernards.
Tyler Barbarich (signed with Delaware) won 10 of 11 face-offs and senior Brian Lenskold (Manhattan) won six of eight face-offs while junior John Longordo scored two goals as the Panthers (17-2) won their 12th straight game and avenged an early-season 6-5 loss to Hunterdon.
Bridgewater-Raritan, which also won the Somerset County title, took a 6-2 halftime lead fueled by a 9-1 advantage at the face-off X.
“This time around we really played our game,” said Barbarich, whose team won the state title two years ago. “We have been playing on the top of our game lately to the point we believe we can beat anyone in the state.
“It feels amazing to be a Group 4 champ again,” Barbarich said. “I had the opportunity to be one my sophomore year but it doesn’t even compare to when your a senior holding the trophy again. You play with a lot more heart and pride knowing you need to win and don’t want it to be your last game.”
Ray Mastroianni led the Panthers with four goals.
