Men’s recruits: Great Valley’s Gartner heads 10 incoming freshmen for Villanova

Villanova men’s lacrosse Head Coach Michael Corrado is set to welcome the addition of 10 student-athletes for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The class of 2015 features four all-America selections, five all-state honorees, seven all-league performers and includes a balanced mix of three attackmen, four midfielders, two defensemen and one goalkeeper.

Joining the Wildcats this fall are Eric Gartner (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley), Christian Bennardo (Cutchogue, N.Y./St. Anthony’s), Reed Carlson (Arnold, Md./St. Mary’s), Ryan DeSimone (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East), Mike Francia (Wilton, Conn./Wilton), Tyler Holly (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School), Christian Kolderup (Darien, Conn./Darien), Graham Maybell (Darien, Conn./Darien), Connor Oltmans (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and Michael Tsiang (Summit, N.J./Summit).

“Myself and the coaching staff are excited to welcome the addition of these student-athletes to the university and the Villanova Lacrosse family,” Corrado said, “these young men are exceptional athletes and will provide our team with depth and look to make an immediate impact on the field when they arrive on campus this fall.”

Great Valley: Earned four varsity letters under Tony Verna… Tallied 225 career points and set a school record with 93 points in a single season… 2011 First Team All-State and All-League selection… 2011 and 2010 Team MVP… Played for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club … 2008 Freshman of the Year… Also lettered in indoor track… Earned High Honors all four years.

Christian Bennardo

St. Anthony’s: Earned two varsity letters under Keith Wizorek, posting 25 goals and 20 assists during his senior season and leading the team to a New York AAA Catholic League Championship… 2011 and 2010 All-League selection… Member of the 2010 St. Anthony’s Catholic League championship team… Champ Camp and Got Skillz Fall Tournament participant and a Warrior 40 showcase selection… Member of the National Honor Society and Honor Roll… 2011 St. Anthony’s Leadership Award winner.

Reed Carlson
Goalkeeper
6’2”, 180lbs
St. Mary’s: Earned two varsity letters under Matt Hogan and Rob Chomo, battling injuries through his senior season… Key member of the two-time MIAA “A” semi-final teams… Member of the Baltimore Crabs 2011 squad which claimed championship titles in the U-19 division of the Vail Shootout, Rutgers MVP Tournament and Crab City Challenge… Runners-up in the National Scholastic Club Lacrosse Association (NSCLA) National Cup… Also earned three varsity letters in soccer… Member of the National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars and the Latin National Honor Society… Maryland Distinguished Scholar Honorable Mention… President’s Education Award winner.

Ryan DeSimone

Smithtown East: Earned four varsity letters under Jason Lambert, serving as team captain… Named a 2011 Under Armour All-American… 2011 Top-50 Rising Senior… 2011 Academic All-American, All-County and All-Division selection… Team MVP… Finished his senior season leading Long Island with 93 points (45g, 48a)… Led Suffolk County with 48 assists… Posted a four-year total of 217 points via 123 goals and 94 assists… Tallied a school record with eight goals in one game and 11 points (5g, 6a) in a game… 2010 Under Armour Underclassmen All-America selection… 2010 Warrior 40 All-American Team… 2010 Inside Lacrosse Top-25 Rising Junior… 2009 Inside Lacrosse Super Sophomore… 2008 Suffolk County Rookie of the Year… Member of the National Honor Society and Italian Honor Society.

Tyler Holly
Midfield
6’1”, 192lbs
Collegiate School: Earned three varsity letters under Andrew Stanley, registering 13 goals, 26 assists, 85 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers in his senior season… Led the Collegiate School to a 2011 Virginia Prep League Championship with a 13-7 overall record… 2011 All-Prep and US Lacrosse Academic All-American selection… Also lettered in football as a linebacker and receiver, serving as team captain for the 2010 state championship runners-up… 2010 All-Prep and All-State selection in football… Earned two varsity letters in indoor track, gathering All-State honors in the 200m and 400m events…Four-year member of the Honor Roll… 2011 Lexus of Richmond `Pursuit of Perfection’ Scholar-Athlete Finalist.

Christian Kolderup

Darien: Earned four varsity letters under Jeff Brameier, posting one goal and three assists during his senior season and leading the team to a FCIAC championship… 2011 First Team All-State and First Team All-FCIAC selection… 2011 Connecticut senior All-Star game participant… 2010 Honorable Mention All-FCIAC… Also lettered in football as a running back and linebacker.

Graham Maybell
Midfield
5’10”, 160lbs
Darien: Earned three varsity letters under Jeff Brameier, recording 29 goals and nine assists in his senior season… 2011 All-American, First Team All-State and First Team All-FCIAC selection… Chosen to participate in the 2011 Connecticut Senior All-Star game… 2010 All-FCIAC Second Team… 2010 Connecticut Super Juniors All-Star team… Also earned three varsity letters in football as a running back and safety, where he was named MVP of the FICAC Championship Game and an All-FCIAC First Team selection.

Connor Oltmans

Montgomery: Earned three varsity letters under Tim Sullivan and Don Green, recording 45 ground balls and 73 caused turnovers… Led Montgomery to a 12-9 overall record during his senior season… Named the 2011 Team MVP… Also earned four varsity letters in football, excelling in several positions… 2010 football team MVP, 2009 First Team All-Skyland Conference defensive back, First Team Pricetown Packet defensive back and named to the 2009 New Jersey Coaches Super 100 Junior Team… Ranks 4th in Montgomery football program history with 122 career tackles… Ranks 8th in career interceptions and tied the school record with 15 tackles in a single game… Member of the National Honor Society, 2011 Skyland Conference Student-Athlete and is a President’s Education Award Program recipient.
