Sophomore goalie Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School) made seven saves in a half’s work and freshman Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion) debuted as a starter at midfield with two assists as host Dukw hipped Siena, 20-6, today to begin defense of its 2010 national championship in Durham, n.C.
Wigrizer, the starter for the Blue Devils last year when they toppled Notre Dame for the crown, allowed three goals as Duke bolted to a 12-3 halftime lead. Wolf, the Phillylacrosse.com Co-Player of the Year in 2010, played attack throughout his scholastic career but has been running mostly at midfield in the preseason.
Also contributing to Duke’s defense were sophomore Billy Conners (Malvern Prep) and freshman Henry Lobb (Malvern Prep).
For Siena, sophomore midfielder Mic DeBellis (Emmaus) had three groundballs.
Navy 14, VMI 8
Senior defenseman Michael Hirsch (Perkiomen Valley) had two groundballs and a caused turnover and senior midfielder and captain Marty Gallagher (Haverford School) added a caused turnover to lead the Midshipmen in their opener.
UMass 8, Army 5
Sophomore attackman Colin Fleming (St. Joseph’s Prep) had two goals and two groundballs to lead the Minutemen in their opener.
Ohio State 20, Mercer 2
Junior Eddie Bambino (Penn Charter) scored two goals and added an assist as the Buckeyes improved to 2-0.
North Carolina 14, Robert Morris 11
Freshman Tyler Rankel (Downingtown West) had an assist for the Colonials in their opening-day loss to the Tar Heels.
