Kyle Bergman’s goal with just 38 seconds to play in the fourth overtime gave host Drexel an 8-7 victory against Bryant today at Vidas Field.
The Dragons (3-3) led by four goals on three occasions, but the Bulldogs (2-3) scored the last four goals to force overtime.
Bergman came out from behind the net and fired a tough-angle shot from about 10 yards away to beat Bryant’s Jameson Love on the short side for his second goal of the game to finally end the longest game in Vidas Field history. Drexel gained possession with just over a minute to play when Brian Teuber (Penn Charter, 6 GBs, 2 CTs) caused a turnover, picked up the loose ball and got the ball into the offensive zone.
Each team had plenty of chances after regulation to end the contest. Bryant’s Gary Crowley, who led all players with four goals, had the best chance to end the game in the first overtime, but was denied by Mark Manos (Salesianum School).
In the second overtime, Drexel’s Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) bounced one past Love, but hit the post. Bryant took the carom, went down field and set up Crowley for another chance. Manos came up with the save once again for the Dragons. In the third extra session, Bryant had an extra man opportunity for a minute after a Drexel penalty on Matt Dusek for unnecessary roughness.
Peter McMahon received a pass right in front of the cage and appeared ready to end it, but Mark Manos came up with yet another big save, this one off his shoulder, to keep the score deadlocked at 7-7. The Bulldogs outshot Drexel, 6-0, in the third overtime period.
Crowley and Max Weisenberg got the Bulldogs back in the game after trailing 7-3. Travis Harrington set up Crowley with 8:51 to play which started the comeback. Weisenberg then scored two goals in the span of 35 seconds to chip the lead down to 7-6. It remained that way until the 1:42 mark when Crowley capped the comeback with his fourth goal fof the contest.
Drexel led 3-1 at intermission. The Bulldogs got on the board first on a McMahon goal. However, the Drexel defense tightened and held Bryant off the board until the waning seconds of the third quarter. Glynn tied the game at 1-1 in the first quarter, while Bergman’s extra man goal gave Drexel the lead. Aaron Prosser added the final goal of the half on a nice unassisted move up the middle in traffic.
The lead swelled to 5-1 early in the second half when Nick Trizano and Scott Perri had even strength goals. The teams exchanged the next four goals as Bryant had two from Crowley, while the Dragons had tallies from Perri and Robert Church.
Bryant outshot Drexel, 41-35, and had a 10-7 advantage in the extra periods. The Dragons won the face-off battle, 14-8, and had 39 ground balls to 30 for the Bulldogs. Each team had a pair of extra man goals. The goalkeepers were outstanding all day. Love had 17 saves, including five in the second quarter when Drexel had 11 shots. Manos had 13 saves, four in the overtime periods.
For Bryant, defenseman Mason Poli (Downingtown East) had three groundballs and three caused turnovers and fellow defender Joe Rauchut (Penn Charter) had a groundball and a caused turnover.
