Drexel’s Scott Perri, Robert Church and Nick Trizano each had hat tricks as the Dragons defeated No. 19 Penn State in State College, 14-13, in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Perri added five assists and finished the day with eight points as Drexel improved to 2-2 in the CAA and 6-5 overall. It was the first loss in league play for the Nittany Lions (5-5, 2-1).

The Dragons’ offense scored the first four goals of the game and never trailed in the contest. Penn State trailed 14-8 with 5:40 to play in the third, but the Nittany Lions scored the next five goals, including three in the final two minutes to throw a scare into the Dragons late in the game.

Perri put the Dragons on the board just 1:08 into the game with an unassisted goal. Trizano followed just over a minute later, before Perri and Church gave the Dragons a four-goal cushion less than five minutes into the game.

The Lions scored four of the next five goals to cut the lead to 5-4. Drexel’s only goal during that run came from Andrew Collins, who returned to action after missing the last month due to injury. The Dragons’ gained some breathing room before intermission with man-up goals from Perri and Trizano to make it a 7-4 game at halftime.

Penn State got on the board first in the early going of the second period, but the Drexel offense exploded for five goals in the quarter. Church and Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) each scored twice in the second and Church added another as the Dragons led by six at intermission. At the half, Church, Perri and Trizano had already recorded hat tricks, with Glynn adding two more goals.

Kyle Bergman finished the Drexel scoring with two third quarter goals, including one on the man-up to give Drexel what appeared to be a comfortable five goal lead at 14-9 heading into the fourth quarter.

However, Colton Vosburgh (Unionville) got the Nittany Lions started with a goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the game. The Drexel lead was cut to three with 1:32 to play when Nick Dolik scored on the man-down for Penn State.

Matt Mackrides (Malvern Prep) scored his fourth goal of the game to make it 14-11 with 39 seconds left and 14 seconds later, Shane Sturgis (Downingtown East) beat Mark Manos (Salesianum School) to cut the lead to one. Penn State was unable to get a shot, despite getting the ball back in the closing seconds, as Manos picked up the loose ball and aired it out of the Drexel end to preserve the win.

Sturgis added three assists and Jack Forster (La Salle) and Vosburgh each scored twice for Penn State. Nick Dolik had three goals. Austin Kaut (Springfield-Delco) made seven saves in goal.

The Drexel extra-man unit finished with four goals in nine attempts, while the man-down unit did not allow a goal in five Nittany Lion opportunities. Perri’s remarkable offensive year continued, as the senior now has 29 goals and 50 points in only 11 games. He entered the week first in the CAA and in the top 10 nationally in scoring.
