Maryland’s Schmidt (U. Dublin), Delaware’s Kaminski (Strath Haven) taken high in MLL college draft

Senior midfielder Kevin Crowley (New Westminster H.S./New Westminster, B.C.) of Stony Brook University was selected by the Hamilton Nationals with the first overall pick in the 2011 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft held in Baltimore on Friday evening.

Meanwhile Maryland defenseman Brett Schmidt (Upper Dublin) was the top philly player selected. He went as the No. 15 pick (3rd round) to the Denver Outlaws, led by recently promoted head coach Tom Slate (former coach at Downingtown East and assistant coach for Philadelphia Wings).

Also from Philly, Boston selected Delaware midfielder Kevin Kaminski (Strath Haven) with the No. 22 pick (4th round) and then added Delaware defenseman Pat Dowling with the 34th pick (6th round).

Villanova’s Brian Karalunas (midfielder) went next at No. 35 to Long Island.

The final two picks of the draft [round 8] were also from Delaware. Long Island selected Hens defenseman Matt Stefurak at No. 47 and Chesapeake plucked midfielder John Austin at No. 48.
