Washington College head men’s lacrosse coach Jeff Shirk has announced the Shoremen’s captains for the 2011-12 academic year.
Senior midfielder Dave Lundquist (West Chester, PA/Henderson), senior defenseman Bryan Botti (Hereford, MD/Hereford), senior attackman Billy Stafford (White Hall, MD/Hereford) and senior goalkeeper Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary’s) were elected via a team vote.
“I think the team elected four very good leaders in Bryan, Billy, Pete, and Dave,” notes Shirk. “All of them were leaders both on and off the field last season and are expected to flourish in their roles this season. The important thing that I stressed to the guys is if we want to reach our goals this year we all have to be leaders. Everyone has a role and everyone has to be a leader in their own way.”
Lundquist scored two goals, tallied one assist, and scooped up 15 ground balls in 14 games last season. He has seven goals, nine assists, and 27 ground balls in 36 career games with the Shoremen.
Botti started all 14 games for the Shoremen in 2011, recording 29 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. In 40 career games, he has totaled 56 ground balls and 34 caused turnovers. He was named the team’s Most Improved Player as a freshman in 2009.
Stafford scored nine goals and notched four assists in 14 games for the Shoremen in 2011. He has tallied 17 goals, 16 assists, and 18 ground balls in 40 career games. As a sophomore in 2010, he led the team in assists with nine.
Stewart was named the Shoremen’s Most Valuable Player for 2011, posting a save percentage of .587 and a goals-against average of 9.61 while starting all 14 games. In 24 career games with the Shoremen, Stewart has recorded 245 saves and 41 ground balls.
The Shoremen are scheduled to open the 2012 season February 25th with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Goucher College.
