McKenzie Rafferty had four goals, Ashley Poli added three goals and an assist and Kelly Devlin had a goal and five assists while Allie Murray made 10 saves as Downingtown East defeated Archbishop Carroll, 13-8, in one of the marquee matches Saturday at the 11th annual Kayie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor.
Downingtown East, ranked No. 4 in the PA Media Rankings, improved to 12-1 with its 10th straight win. Archbishop Carroll, ranked No. 1, fell to 10-2 and suffered its defeat to a PA team.
The Cougars had the edge in draw controls and midfield transition. Also, Murray made several key saves and a number of takeaways.
“This is a huge game for us,” said Devlin. “We definitely kept our composure.
“We worked on (draw controls) at practice all week; and the draws started it all. Also, our shots were well placed.”
Haley Nelson added two goals for Downingtown East and Linnea Faccenda had a goal and two assists. Emily Solenberger contributed a goal and an assist.
“We knew if we could control the draw and come at them with speed on offense, there’d be possibilities for us to dominate,” aid Cougars coach Caitlin Barbakoff. “On defense we focused on crashing to the ball. And (Murray) came up with some big saves.”
For Carroll, Hannah Schmitt scored four goals and Rachel Flynn added a goal and an assist. Maddie Lesher, Gabbi Hull and Natalie Schmitt each scored once.
“Murray played great,” said Carroll coach Lorraine Beers. “We held Devlin and Solenberger to one goal each, but we had a difficult time at midfield on transition defense.”
