Matt Walters had two goals and two assists to earn the Game MVP honor and four other players scored twice today as Haverford School survived one of its biggest challenges of the year and defeated Lawrenceville School, 13-11, in the semifinals of the Inter-Ac invitational before a packed house at Cabrini College.

The Fords (22-0) can finish a perfect season and stake claim as the top team in the nation when it meets Inter-Ac rival Malvern Prep Wednesday in the title game at Cabrini (7 p.m.). The Friars advanced to the finals by toppling Penn Charter, 6-4.

The Big Red (18-3) erupted for six goals in the second period to tie the game, 7-7, at halftime, and continued to stay close until the end. Using its quickness and explosive 1-2 punch of Matt Donovan (four goals) and Adam Fishman (three goals), Lawrenceville put a major scare into the Fords.

Haverford School, though, prevailed as senior goalie Conor Kelly made 17 saves and Hup Hupfeldt, Sam Rohr, Gavin McBride and Brendan McGrath each scored twice. McBride, McGrath and long pole Goran Murray had goals in the final period.

“I am extremely honored to win the award, but I think all the guys on the team were deserving,” said Walters of the MVP award. “I’m just a part of the team and everyone played hard.
