The 19th annual Abington Girls Lacrosse Play Day saw a day of beautiful weather as over 80 teams in grades 3 through 8 from as far away as Back Mountain (Dallas, PA) competed at the Abington Senior High/Jr. High School campus on May 7.
This event, held annually on the Saturday before Mothers Day, combines traditional “friendly” play as well as competitive action. This was the fourth year for the 7th / 8th grade competitive tournament.
This year’s champions, the Springfield Spartans, join past winners, Council Rock, Moorestown, and Chestnut Hill. The Spartans fought their way through two rounds of round robin play and the final bracket to beat fellow No. 1 seed from the East bracket, Horsham.
Wissahickon, garnered the iron women award, coming from a play in bracket to lose in the semifinals and then emerge victorious and in third-place game over Chestnut Hill for a total of seven games for the day.
This year the event included the first competitive flight for the 5th / 6th Grade group as Wissahickon edged home team Abington to take the championship.
