Ally Heavens tied the game with 27 seconds to play in regulation and Halley Barnes won it in overtime to give host Garnet Valley a stunning 10-9 victory tonight over Conestoga, leaving the Jaguars as one of four teams to share the Central League girls’ lacrosse championship.

Garnet Valley (16-2 overall) finished in the deadlock with Harriton, Radnor and Springfield-Delco, all with 9-2 marks. The four teams should receive high seeds this weekend when the District 1 field is announced.

Conestoga (11-5 overall) could have finished in the four-way tie for the crown with a win. The Pioneers closed 8-3 in the league.

The Jaguars trailed, 9-8, when AnnaElise Morello (one goal, four assists) fed Heavens (three goals, one assist) with the tying goal. Coley Ricci won the draw that set up the game-winner by Barnes, who finished with five goals.

The Garnet Valley players stormed the field after the win, celebrating a title in only their fourth year as a Central League member. Garnet Valley – which went just 4-14 and won two Central League games in its first year in the league, in 2008 – has won 13 straight games.

The Garnet Valley defense was led by Missy Koscinski, Lizhan Visser and Ricci.

“The defense deserves a shout-out,” said Garnet Valley coach Kate Henwood. in her second season. “They played their best game of the year, hands-down.”

Kara Stroup scored once for Garnet Valley and Kate Stroup made 13 saves in a solid effort in goal. Haley Warden added an assist.

“This program has come so far in such a short time,” said Henwood. “The players and staff work so hard to push ourselves everyday at practice. The girls finally got their due last night.

“In such a competitive league with so much parity this year it’s only fitting that it happened in OT. I am so proud of these girls.”

Meghan McGillis had five goals and an assist for the Pioneers while Kelly Morrison had two goals and one assist and Brooke McGillis had a goal and an assist. Catie Smtih had one goal and Sarah Priem made 10 saves.
