Former Springfield-Delco coach Michael Friel and Downingtown East coach Caitlin Barbakoff are returning as the head coaches of the Philly teams in this year’s Under Armour Underclassmen Games.

Friel, now the athletic director at Radnor, was an Honorable Mention Phillylacrosse.com Coach of the Year pick as well as the Eastern Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association Coach of the Year in 2010 when his Cougars won the Central League championship and fell to Conestoga in the District 1 finals.

Barbakoff led Downingtown East to a fifth-place finish in the District 1 tournament and into the second round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) tournament.

Friel’s assistants this year will be current Springfield-Delco coach Tom Lemieux – formerly Friel’s assistant – and Conestoga head coach Brian Samson. Samson took his Pioneers to the District 1 and PIAA titles last year and Lemieux was the PIAA Assistant Coach of the Year. Lemieux assisted Friel last year in the UA Games.

Barbakoff’s assistants again will be Boyertown coach Pam Wernersbach and former Strath Haven coach Jen Duckenfield. Wernersbach led the Bears to their seventh straight Pioneer Athletic Conference in 2010 and was named a Phillylacrosse.com Honorable Mention Coach of the Year. Duckenfield led Strath Haven to a share of the Central League crown – its first Central League crown ever – in 2010.

Barbakoff, Wernersbach and Duckenfield led a young Philly team to a fifth-place finish last year at the UA tourney.

The Under Armour tournament has expanded this year to include two more teams – from the West and South – and now has 10 teams in all for boys and girls. The Games will be held the weekend of July 1st-3rd at Johnny Unitas Stadium on the campus of Towson University in Towson, Md.

This year’s 10 regions will include Philadelphia (Pennsylvania and Delaware), Baltimore, Long Island, Midwest, New England, New Jersey (N.J. and Delaware), Upstate NY, South, Washington, D.C. and West.

The Philly boys’ tryouts are June 13-14 at Radnor High (5-8 pm); the girls also will have tryouts at Radnor (5-8 p.m.) on June 15-16.

All boys and girls in the graduating classes of 2012, 2013, and 2014 are eligible to tryout and receive the opportunity to be one of the 24 players selected by a panel of coaching experts to represent their region. All participants will receive an Under Armour event shirt, an event reversible, a subscription to Inside Lacrosse magazine, as well as an in-depth biography page in the college coaches’ recruiting booklet. College coaches will attend tryouts and the tournament.
