Duke’s Kim Wenger (Great Valley) and Maryland’s Dan Burns have been named the inaugural recipients of the Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award as announced this week by the One Love Foundation.

The award, presented annually to two ACC lacrosse student-athletes, was created to acknowledge the selfless acts of initiative and commitment that often go unnoticed. Criteria for selection include dedication, humility, hard work, community service, leadership, kindness and sportsmanship.

“I’m so proud that Kim is the recipient of the very first Yeardley Love Unsung Hero Award,” head coach Kerstin Kimel (Haverford High alum) said. “She is the ultimate team player whose humble and selfless manner epitomizes everything that Yeardley stood for. Kim will no doubt be an excellent representation of this award.”

On the field, Wenger, a junior midfielder with the Blue Devils, is having a career year with 16 goals and 19 assists. The All-ACC honoree has also chipped in with 29 draw controls, 28 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers on the year, but is often noted for her outstanding hustle and selfless play.

Wenger was a US Lacrosse All-American in 2008 when she led Great Valley to the District 1 Class AA championship game.

Described as “the ultimate selfless teammate,” Wenger’s contributions might be even greater off the field as the junior’s participation on the squad’s Team Council and pre-game highlight films display her team-first attitude.

“She leads by example,” Kimel added. “Kim does more ‘behind-the-scenes’ to help our program thrive than anyone. She is a compassionate and considerate teammate, who always puts everyone else’s needs ahead of her own.”

Wenger and the Blue Devils fell to No. 1 Maryland Friday in the NCAA semifinal matchup. Wenger had two goals, two assists and two draw controls.
