Top-seeded Conestoga used a late first-half goal and a 4-0 run to open the second half in claiming a 10-4 victory over Central Bucks East Thursday night at Radnor to earn its third straight District 1 boys’ lacrosse championship.
The Pioneers (21-1) will open Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) tourney Wednesday against District 4 fourth-place finisher Cumberland Valley or Wyomissing.
CB East (20-2) will play District 1 fifth-place finisher Ridley in the first round Wednesday.
The Patriots seized a 3-1 lead when Parker Self scored off a Conor McSherry feed with 1:54 to play in the first half. But Conestoga’s Billy Flatley scored with :33 left in the half and the Pioneers took over the momentum into the third period.
First, Brian Dailey hit Connor Frisina (two goals) for the game-tying score and then Tyler Brooke (two goals) scored on a great individual effort to make it 4-3. Several minutes later Tanner Scott (one goal, one assist) upped the lead to 5-3 off a pass from Kevin Rudd and Flatley scored his second two minutes after that.
East finally stopped the spurt when Ethan Debuque scored off a pass from Kuhn with 56 seconds left in the period to make it 7-4.
“Halftime was the turning point,” said Flatley. “We knew CB East was a tough team, we started slow…we weren’t converting…at halftime we decided to lock it down.”
Sean Reilly, who won 11 of 17 face-offs for CB east, was a key in helping spark the early lead.
Conestoga coach Brian Samson said the Pioneers settled into their game in the second half.
“We just tried to match their speed,” he said. “Their faceoff guy was tremendous…once we settled into that we road a great third quarter.”
Bradlee Lord added a goal and an assist for Conestoga while John Lopes and Robbie Zonino each made six saves in goal.
Ryan Whitney and Chris Vetter each scored once for CB East and Harrison Holak made eight saves.
“Somebody has to win and somebody has to lose,” said CB East coach Bruce Garcia. “They definitely came out in the second half and played better than we did in the second half. We played better than they did in the first half. We didn’t play better in the first half enough.”
