Delaware is ranked No. 24 in the nation by Inside Lacrosse as it counts down the Top 40 men’s teams in Division I
Veteran Blue Hens coach Bob Shillinglaw took Delaware to the Colonial Athletic Association championship last year with a late surge. Then the Blue Hens came within a goal of defeating favored North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA tournament last year.
Shillinglaw’s biggest task is to replace two All-Americans, Curtis Dickson (2010’s CAA Player of the Year) and Martin Cahill, who, combined, accounted for nearly 50% of Delaware’s offense last year.
Shillinglaw does have some able replacements. The offensive sparkplug figures to be 5-7, 170-pound junior attackman Grant Kaleikau (16 goals, 25 assists). Help up front should come from sophomore Sean Finegan, junior midfielder Eric Smith and sophomore Ryan Serville, a transfer from Jacksonville. The breakout player may be fifth-year senior Anthony Ruiz, who is being switched from midfield to attack.
In goal, three-year starter Noah Fossner is an anchor to the defense, which includes All-CAA close defender Pat Dowling, Matt Stefurak and Tim Langmaid. The three seniors are joined by sophomore close defender/long stick middie Connor Fitzgerald. Freshman red-shirt longstick defender Will Wojciechowski could be a big plus.
