Gerald Ung is expected to take the stand today in his defense as the trial involving the shooting last year of former lacrosse standout Eddie DiDonato nears its conclusion at the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Ung, 29, of Virginia, has been charged with attempted murder for shooting DiDonato six times on Jan. 17, 2010, between Third and Fourth and Market streets in Philadelphia at 2:30 a.m. On Friday two of Ung’s friends testified that they feared DiDonato and his friends as the two groups walked down Market Street trading insults.

Earlier in the week, DiDonato’s friends testified that they did not know what caused Ung to shoot DiDonato, critically wounding him.

It is expected that the trial will go to jury today or tomorrow after closing arguments are heard.

DiDonato, 24, of Blue Bell, was a standout at La Salle College High and Villanova University.
