Nineteen scholastic and club teams are competing today and 13 more will play tomorrow in the inaugural NXT Sports Philly Indoor Lacrosse Championships at the Feasterville Sportsplex.
The playoffs for the high school tourney begin tonight at 7:00. Action has been held on three arenas.
Games start at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow in the youth division. The event is free and open to the public. All scores can be accessed real-time at www.nxtscores.com.
The tourney features teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Philly squads in the top (Class AA) Division include NXT Lacrosse Club, Episcopal Academy, Abington, Lower Merion, Neshaminy, Souderton, Harry S Truman and Pennsbury.
Lower Merion first-year co-coach Casey O’Rourke saw the event as an ideal way to get his young team some experience with the season’s first outdoor practice three weeks away.
“The goal is to get a better idea of what we have and what we’re working with,” O’Rourke said. “We want to keep the stick in their hand and keep the love of the game alive.
“We’re trying to build it. If we win great, but we’re looking to get them out there playing together.”
Neshaminy coach Josh Hanlon was happy for his team to get in a long day of games.
“With the season right around the corner, our main focus is getting guys more stick work; the more you get the better,” he said. “You can only compete so much when you’re doing workouts indoors. It’s nice getting guys in a competitive atmosphere.
“There’s great teams from all over, it’s well-organized and it’s a nice facility. We like that it’s a lot of lacrosse in one day – four 36-minute games, and it’s a lot of competition.”
