Jeff Heath had three goals and an assist and Blaine Fleming scored three goals as visiting St. Joseph’s Prep defeated Episcopal Academy, 11-8, today in a showdown of Philly powers.
Rob Watts added two goals and two assists and Brad James scored twice for the Hawks, who improved to 2-1. St. Joe’s entered play ranked No. 6 in the PA Media Rankings; Episcopal Academy (3-1) was No. 3.
Ian Strain and Tyler Odell each had three goals for EA.
The win was also big for Prep coach Eric Gregg, an EA grad who grew up playing Little League baseball with Churchmen coach Andy Hayes.
“It’s always fun to beat my alma mater,” he said. “It’s early, but we have goals in mind and every win is a big one.”
The game was tied, 2-2, after one period, but the Hawks took a 6-4 lead into halftime and held the advantage the rest of the way.
“I think the defense answered the call,” Gregg said. “Also, the offense possessed the ball well. I think guys are figuring out each other and getting good spacing.
“The offense is starting to click.”
Ian Correia had seven saves to earn the win.
