It’s not often that a coach is content after his team – with high expectations – opens with its third straight loss and does it against his alma mater.
But La Salle coach Bill Leahy said his Explorers fared well today in an 8-5 loss in Towson, Md. to Calvert Hall – an MIAA power that is 6-0 and was coming off a key 5-4 win over St. Paul’s.
The Explorers fell behind, 5-0, in the first half, but kept it close in the second half as Sean Coleman and Jack Bogorowski each tallied two goals and Matt Rambo added one.
Jack Brust, who was the hero in Tuesday’s victory over defending MIAA “A” champion St. Paul’s, had 13 saves for the Cardinals. Kelton Black and Carter Brown each had two goals and an assist for Calvert Hall.
Calvert Hall is coached by Bryan Kelly, who attended Pot Spring Elementary, Ridgely Middle and Calvert Hall with Leahy.
Leahy said his team showed improvement in most facets of their game, especially defense.
“Their goalie made 13 saves so if he is not that strong, we have a chance to win this game,” he said. “We showed improvement in a few places. It was a better game for us.”
La Salle opens its Catholic League season at home against Archbishop Carroll on Wednesday before gearing for a special game Friday against Maryland’s DeMatha in a benefit game to honor two fallen heroes – La Salle alum and 1st Lt. Travis Manion, USMC, and DeMatha grad and LT (SEAL) Brendan Looney at Navy/Marine Corps Stadium at 3 p.m.
