Hup Hupfeldt and Zach Rego each scored three goals and Carl Walrath dished off seven assists as Haverford School defeated South Jersey power St. Augustine, 13-3, tonight in a non-league lacrosse game at Drexel University.
The Fords, the top-ranked team in the ESPN RISE Powerade Fab 50 and Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse national polls and the PA Media Rankings, improved to 7-0. The Hermits, ranked No. 45 in the ESPN RISE Powerade Fab 50, fell to 3-1.
The game was tied, 2-2, when the Fords defense took over. They scored the last six goals of the first half and were never threatened. Joe McCallion and Will Gural dominated at the face-off X and the Haverford defense tightened up.
“We struggled in the beginning, but in the end we came through and made the stops when we needed to,” said senior defenseman Alex Beatty.
The Ford now gear for a showdown Saturday morning (11 a.m.) at home against St. Joseph’s Prep.
“Saturday is going to be a big game against a tough opponent, and there’s a lot on the line,” Beatty said. “If we keep playing well together as a unit, we will continue to have success.”
Grove Stewart added two goals for the Fords.
“We had some trouble early moving the ball around, but we cleaned up our sticks and calmed down a bit,” Stewart said. “We have to go into Saturday prepared, because we can’t start that slowly against a tougher opponent.”
Bill McMenamin had two goals for St. Augustine.
